What is function?

The first thing to consider when you want to refresh your tired space is “What is its function?” Many times, there is more than one answer. For example, Home Office/Guest Room, or in a small home, Dining Room/Library.

Assess the paint

Is the paint congruent with the other rooms? Is it tired? Can it be refreshed? This is a huge game-changer.

Take out everything!

You need a clean slate. Start with the interior architecture and function. You are creating a harmonious shell. New paint, new fixed lighting, new built-in cabinetry… Window coverings are part of this step. Simple, neutral and maybe textured (wood blinds), unless inspirational fabric in drapery or a roman blind.

Flooring

Assuming the flooring itself is good, assess a rug. To determine the size, make sure you know your furniture layout. You need a fun rug. Stick with something you LOVE or a neutral in natural fibres if possible. Not every room will require a rug, but see if this might elevate things.

Seating and furniture

Sometimes a good day bed or hide-a-bed works in a home office, for guests, and a cozy place to sit beside a desk chair. It’s lovely to have multiple zones. Choose something fairly neutral here, and add some fun cushions or a throw for texture and pops of colour. Other furniture, like a desk, needs to look great and be a real workhorse. Be careful not to choose a bunch of small items like multiple side tables. Fewer larger pieces are more calming to the eye. Don’t forget you can repurpose something by painting it to refresh it.

Artwork

So important. Buy original. Deals all over from local artists. There is such good energy in a space knowing someone painted it with their hands and soul! Walls do not have to be loaded up. Plants, perhaps a big one, are fun and full of life.

Accessorize

I love books, a few compelling pottery pieces, travel memoirs or sculpture. Keep it to a few so they have more presence.

Keep it simple

We all lead busy lives and need a reprieve in our sanctuaries. We can always rotate those family photos, Knick knacks, etc. A calming and inspirational space is the goal…good luck!
